What Wedges Should I Choose?

James H asked:

I am a junior golfer who is shortly getting adults clubs. I play off a handicap of 11 and i really want to improve. I’ve been looking at some wedges on the american golf website, but can’t really decide. I don’t want to spend loads of money but i like the look of the titleist Bob Vokey wedges – does anyone have any suggestions?? Also i think i will only buy a 56 degrees and a 60 degrees
many thanks

James, Wedges are all about Looks, Feel and performance. Vokey’s are great wedges. However I’d advise you to hit several brands to see what is the best fit for you. Cleveland makes good wedges as well. If you like the looks and feel of a club you will have more confidence in it.

Vokey wedges are excellent and would be a great investment, but there are plenty of great forged wedges available (Callaway, Cleveland etc.) – do make sure they are ‘forged’.

I would go for 52 and 58 degree (if only buying 2 wedges) – I assume you will have a PW in your iron set. That would be approx. 47 degree of loft, so then having the next wedge at 56 degree’s leaves a big gap between clubs. By having 52 and 58 degree wedges, you have a smaller and more manageble gap between your wedges – this is a very decent 2 wedge set up.

IF you decide to buy 3 wedges then, 52, 56 and 60 would be my personal choice/set up.

Check out bounce levels as well. (in general, Low bounce is for hard ground, high bounce is for soft ground / soft bunkers)

Personally I go for 52 with mid bounce (8-10 degrees) and 58 with higher bounce 12 degrees. This covers most options.

    good luck with your purchase.

If you like the look of the Vokeys then spend the extra money on the Vokeys. Because wedges are so important, these are clubs you should splurge a little on. Besides your putter and Driver, what clubs do you think you’ll use the most? Also, as others have noted, try out the Cleveland and Callaway wedges as well. All three companies make very good wedges. See what wedges, when you stand over the ball, you feel most confident with and buy those. You need confidence when chipping and if you can afford good wedges, get them. Great investment in your game.

James …NCC has given you some good advice to follow here. You want to cut down on the gap between clubs so think about what conditions you’ll be playing under and choose your weapons wisely. Sounds to me like you’ve got good taste in clubs.

The most important thing to remember about the wedges is that you will probably, at your handicap level, need one quite a bit. It really doesn’t matter who made it, what it costs, or what it looks like, YOU must like your wedges, Keep trying as many as you can get your hands on until you find the magic wedge..

I use both Vokey 60 and a Cleveland 60. In my personal opinion, Cleveland manufacturs better wedges.

Since you dont want to spend more, initially invest on a 60 and then you can look at a 56.

You should choose the wedgies that feel best when up in there pretty tight!

I don’t see anything on here about the Taylormade TP wedges. Ya they may be aging a little now, but remember the hype when they came out? Personally, I have the 54* Black TP and a 60* CG 12. This is a better gap I think for the wedges, but that is because of my PW. It also depends on what irons you have. Since you are an 11, I would assume that you have a good but not great set. If you hit your PW a long way, then I would go with the 54* wedge, if not then the 52*. Also depends on where you play and average conditions. Do not forget about the bounce and how important it is. If you play on firm conditions, then you want a lower bounce to help pinch the ball, if you play on wetter conditions with ample bunkers, then you should look at a higher bounce. For the 54* it doesn’t really matter that much, but for the 60*, the bounce makes a HUGE difference.

For brands, you can go wrong with Titleist, Cleveland, or Taylormade. They are still the leaders in wedge technology. But since wedges are more about feel, the best thing to do is go hit some on an actual course (demo days) and then go from there because sims at Golfsmith and others dont give you enough feedback.

    Stick with Forged as well.

Forged wedges have a softer feel then casted ones, Vokeys are good, but they are casted.
I would recommend Mizuno MP-T series, Best wedges I’ve ever used, and Mizuno is the best in forging.
Price wise it’s cheap too. i got mine 51′ gap, 56′ sand and 60′ lob all brand new for less than $150.

Hey, if you can wait a bit, there are new rules going into effect that make current wedges illegal in tournaments (basically, they are changing the allowed size and spacing of the grooves.) So, current wedges will be going for a steal soon. So if you can wait, you may get what you want but can;t afford, for less money.

Honestly most of your scoring comes from inside 100 yds. Titleist are pretty good, but Clevelands are better. Also get to know your clubs and yardages, it is the most important thing to scoring low. I played on the mini tours for awhile, unfortunately I had an accident and am stuck in a wheel chair now. I used to carry 4-5 wedges it is important to have wedges. Don’t underestimate the short game. good luck.
