I just started playing this past July myself.

I have found this website:
very helpful. If you register can watch video and see other tips from magazines.

Enjoy the game.

I actually have 4 wedges in my golf bag, each one for a certain distance. The lob wedge is the shortest distant club, for shots inside 100 yards. In the winter time, I have this foam yellow golf balls inside the house and I can practice hitting shots off carpet with the lob wedge to keep the "feel" of ball striking going. This really helped me alot with my wedge play. Alot of folks get this fear of hitting the lob wedge and will often quit hitting it or go to some other club, but it should not be feared, but embraced :)
And as the other mentioned, they are quite useful out of bunkers around the green.

I prefer cleveland lob wedges, 60 degrees.
my sand, approach and pitching wedges are callaway x18s.

When I got my clubs, I opted not to get the 3 or 4 iron and made sure I got the sand and approach wedges because I use those clubs more than a 3 or 4 iron. Hybrids replace the 3 or 4 irons anyway.

wedges are for chipping when closer to the green there are many different kinds, you can tell how far they will go by the loft they have(52deg, 60deg, etc.) the higher the degree of wedge, the less distance it will go. for instance a PW is 52deg, and it will go further than a SW, which is 56deg.

wedges are used in the short game, which for ladies I would guess is from about 50 yards into the green including sand traps (sw) sand wedge. I would try golf digest or golf dot com, or google golf insruction
