Golf – I Need a Ruling for Million to 1 Shot?
gw_bushisamoron asked:
Par 3 drive (140) hits the flagstick on the fly and ball becomes wedged between the flag, the stick and the little ring holding the flag on the stick (the bottom one).
Player 1 tells me I have an unplayable lie and have to take a drop with 1 shot penalty. I argue that since I cannot mark my ball, then that can’t be the rule.
Player 2 says play away, just make sure to only touch the ball and not the flag or stick or it’s 2 strokes. No way to do that.

I yanked the ball out, took a drop and sank the 1 foot putt (yay) and penciled in a 2. Who’s right?
Wow, thanks Spood, great answer. I never would have looked there as who thinks of the flag as an obstruction? I usually use it as a target!
It will never happen again, I’m sure.

A flagstick is a movable obstruction and Rule 24-1 applies.
However, in taking relief the player may not place the ball in the hole. Therefore, in equity (Rule 1-4), the player must place the ball on the lip of the hole when taking relief. (Revised)
So in answer to yuor question … You were right … Free drop !
NICE SHOT!!!!!

You were almost right. You were supposed to place the ball, not drop it, since you were on the green.
Spood correctly quoted decision 17/6. Since the situation appears in the decisions, it probably happened to somebody else at some point in time.
Ask your other two guys what they would do if their ball rolled under a bench, or flew into a garbage can. Would they play it from there??
The rules of golf are written with the basic assumption that golf should be a game of skill.
They are very strict about playing the Course as you find it. But they are also very specific that artificial objects should not interfere with your game, since they are not a part of the course.

What a great shot. I was looking at the USGA Rules site when spood posted. Rule 24. Obstructions
Definitions
All defined terms are in italics and are listed alphabetically in the Definitions section.
24-1. Movable ObstructionA player may take relief, without penalty, from a movable obstruction as follows:
b. If the ball lies in or on the obstruction, the ball may be lifted and the obstruction removed. The ball must through the green or in a hazard be dropped, or on the putting green be placed, as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where the ball lay in or on the obstruction, but not nearer the hole.
The ball may be cleaned when lifted under this Rule.
